Sprechen Sie Gorilla?

Hello, internet!

The other day, Chris advised me of the existence of Hit-Monkey. That set me to thinking. I'm pretty sure I know what noises other monkeys in comics make (Hit-Monkey keeps schtum) - ook, eek, aaa-aaa-aaa. Similar onomatopoeia has probably been used for orang-utans, baboons, and so on. But what of gorillas?

Science must know! ...well, not science, more like nonsense, but nonsense must know! Hence this foray into the world of comical gorillas. Wait, that made it sound like they're all light relief acts. Don't listen to me! Listen to the gorillas!

These first instances come courtesy of Pappy's Golden Age Comics Blogzine (something both Chris and I like to peruse. To quote Pappy, "The Grand Comics Database lists the cover artist as Giusto, the writer as Gaylord Dubois, and the artist, pencils and inks, as Bob Correa. From Turok, Son of Stone #6, 1957."

Chris's first thought was that this was a chuckle-gorilla; presumably, a big old dumb-dumb laugh was about all it could muster. I countered with the opinion that it might be a confirmation-gorilla, nodding slowly at aspects of reality as it made its way through Turok's world. And lastly, Chris got all shook up (presumably from the ape's mighty tread) and dubbed it an Elvis-gorilla. Don't tread on his blue suede... er... paws.

In the very next moment, we're treated to this exclamation. My thought was that it was trying, with some difficulty, to pronounce 'Go away!' Chris put me in my place by retorting that the gorilla was in fact demanding that the stone-age fellows before it grow in height, so that they might fight on more even terms. A regular Mr. Terrific, this ape!

More ape-noise nonsense next time, as we continue to try and find the answer to that question that hasn't plagued humanity throughout the ages, 'WOT DO GORILLA SAY?'
